For those of you who are loyal Custom Classic Trucks readers you might remember it was exactly one year ago that we ran our last front and rear suspension guide. The next thing you will notice is while we have some of the same brand names featured, nothing in this guide is a repeat product from last year. Contrary to what some un-hip squares on the outside of our scene might think, the technology surrounding customized classic trucks is in a constant state of evolution.
For those who aren't clear on what is meant by a suspension clip, loosely defined "clip" is a streamlined expression for any suspension setup that supplants one system with another. For example, removing a straight-axle and opting for IFS (independent front suspension) or going from leaf springs on the rear to a trailing-arm setup. That said, the last place you want to turn to for help is a clip joint. That's why we're here to make sure you guys are aware of all the latest and greatest goodies available for your truck from the most reliable sources around.
A few things to keep in mind before you settle on one particular front or rear suspension setup is to remember there are more than just a few choices available. One example is steering systems are available with or without power assist, and come in rack-and-pinion or recirculating ball configurations. Another area where it helps to do some homework first is suspension damping. Do you want airbags, coilover springs, or torsion bar? Last, but not least is what kind of brakes do you need: disc, drum, power, or no power?

Jim Meyer Racing Products
Jim Meyer Racing Products offers '60-87 Chevy/GMC heavy-duty bolt-in or weld-in IFS units. The Jim Meyer IFS kit features '78-88 Impala spindles, 12-inch diameter Impala rotors, calipers, and ball joints. The kits are also based off 5-on-5-inch bolt-patterns for easy wheel selection. When it comes to installing the Jim Meyer setup, the stock crossmember is unbolted and replaced with a new Jim Meyer 2x4x0.188-inch wall crossmember that holds a new '83-87 T-Bird power rack-and-pinion steering unit. Modifications to the bottom of the steering column will be necessary to connect to the rack spline, or the IFS can be used with an ididit or Flaming River column, as well as a Jim Meyer lower column modification kit. To retain the 621/2-inch wide front track, the kit features DOM tubing upper and lower A-arms-1 1/4x0.156-inch wall lower arms and a 1x0.156-inch wall upper A-arms. The IFS also features aluminum coilover shocks with powdercoated springs and a three-position upper mount and two-position lower mount, which offers the desired stance.
