Needless to say, some of the building methods that appeared on the Advance Design Chevy and GMC trucks are a bit archaic. Although several examples come to mind, at this moment in time one particular piece centered on the aesthetic appeal of the rear end comes to the forefront: tailgate chains. And to be honest, when it comes to "curb appeal" tailgate chains are about as attractive as the thought of Rosie O'Donnell sprawled out across the hood of a Corvette like an '80's shop poster! Although tailgate chains may be purposeful, practical, and simple for their time, let's face it: They have no place in our modern-day truck market. Besides taking away from the look of your ride, there's also the physical damage that they cause. While you're cruising down the road, those chains are swinging and swaying like Austin Powers at a '60's swinger party. Before too long all that movement begins to take a toll on your bed in the form of dents, scratches, or those sweet half-moon-looking markings they create. All around, any Advance Design owner is better off leaving that ball and chain in the past. For the past few months Classic Industries has been more than knee deep in hacking away at finishing up the newest vehicle in their fleet of silver-and-maroon rolling propaganda: a '53 Chevy 3100 shop truck. Although the truck maintains a mostly stock appearance, they are also polishing several accents on the '53, including cleaning up the tailgate. The center focus around the job will be refining the look of the rear by removing the chains. Although it may sound easy and straightforward, with the chains removed other areas present themselves as focal points that need to be dealt with. For example, the crew at Classic Industries will need to figure out new latches and some sort of bracing to keep the tailgate from folding down like a ramp. Along with the mechanics, they also decided to take things one step further by swapping out the stock bottom hinges for something a little more modern and filling in the chain indentions on the factory tailgate. In order for the crew to tackle the job, they turned to an inside source: their truck catalog. There they found all the components needed to clean things up and give them a modern and refined look, including a new tailgate with a stamped Chevrolet logo, hidden latches, chain eliminator braces, and hinges. As you'll see, this sweet concoction of parts cleans up the rear end like some miracle goop on a late-night infomercial. Unless this truck somehow... Unless this truck somehow pulled a Jacob Marley, there'sjust no need for it to carry these chains around for eternity. As you can see, the stock setup involving some bulky lower hinges and eyesore chains isn't the cleanest look for a custom classic truck. Like a convoy loaded and ready... Like a convoy loaded and ready to head out, all the parts to clean up the rear of an Advance Design Chevy are all accounted for. Because the Classic Industries... Because the Classic Industries crew is switching to new hinges, there is no way to hang the tailgate asof now. Therefor, the first order of business was for Edgar and Steve to hang the tailgate in the correct position. In order to do this, they C-clamped a metal bar to the frame and then set the gate on the bar. Next, they shimmed the gate... Next, they shimmed the gate to make sure the gate was squared in place. Originally these tailgates... Originally these tailgates were held in place by inserting the loer hinge into the bottom rail of the gate. The new hinges work in the samestyle, only their appearance is much clener. the way the new hinges work is the hinge tab is welded to the bed, and then the gate is bolted to the lower half of the hinge tab. In order to determine the mounting position of the new hinge tab, Edgar bolted the new hinge to the bottom of the gate. Once both hinges were in their... Once both hinges were in their exact opposing places, they were tacked into place. Instead of chains, this new... Instead of chains, this new setup uses braces, or chain eliminators, like a late-model truck. IN order to determine the mounting location of the upper hinge, the kit is supplied with this metal template. By placing the template in the correct position, the "eye" in the template locates the mounting spot. Use a punch through the eye on the template to pinpoint placement. Next, Edgar drlled the correct... Next, Edgar drlled the correct size hole. The upper hinge is then bolted... The upper hinge is then bolted to the bedside. With both hinge points in... With both hinge points in place the tailgate could now be installed. However, Edgar decided to clean up the look of the tailgate first. Because this tailgate will no longer use chains, there is no need for the indentation in the upper side of the gate. Therefore, Edgar cut out the indentation. He then made this filler piece... He then made this filler piece and welded it into place. The finished result is a much cleaner look. Also, due to the fact the... Also, due to the fact the bed no longer uses chains, an opening slot has to be made on the backside of the gate in order for the hinge braces to fold up into. Once again, this part is made easy thanks to the provided template. Place the template in the correct location, and then cut out the highlighted section. Here you can see how the majority of the metal has been removed. All that's left is for the small tab to be removed, which is for the rivet on the braces to slide into. With the material cut, the... With the material cut, the brace can then be mounted in place. The brace is held to the gate by drilling a couple o fholes in the side of the gate and screwing it on. Along with new hinges and... Along with new hinges and no chains, the crew at Classic is also going to clean up the latches as well. The new latches are these spring-loaded locking pins, which look similar to giant-sized bullets and mount inside of the tailgate. first, the crew must layout the measurements of the latch on the backside of the gate. The two 5/8-inch holes are... The two 5/8-inch holes are drilled according to the instructions. | Part Numbers To Kit | | '41-87 Hidden Tailgate Locking Pins: | 100265 | | '41-53 Stepside Tailgate Chain Eliminators: | 102835 | | '41-53 Custom Tailgate Hinge Mounts: | 26241080 | | '47-53 Chevrolet Tailgate: | 100643 | Once the holes are drilled,... Once the holes are drilled, the material between the holes is removed. This area is where the pin will slide to release the gate. Next, Keith drilled another... Next, Keith drilled another 5/8-inch hole in the specified location on the side of the gate. The latch knob is then removed... The latch knob is then removed from the latch assembly, and the latch housing is slid into place. In order to secure the latch,... In order to secure the latch, first the rear mounting screw is inserted through the gate and into the latch housing. Next, the latch knob is screwed... Next, the latch knob is screwed into place, and that's it. the cool thing about these latches is the fact they are spring loaded. By simply pulling back on the latches they release, and then by letting go of the knob they slide back into place. Also, once opened, the latches twist to the side to lock the latch pin into the housing, which makes shutting the gate a breeze. To keep the rattles down,... To keep the rattles down, this foam strip is laid down. In order to locate the latch... In order to locate the latch pin holes on the bedside, this kit once again makes things way easy. The ends of the latch have been machined to act like a punch. By simply closing the gate and snapping the spring-loaded latch, it locates its mounting holes on the bedside by itself. Edgar then drilled the appropriate-sized... Edgar then drilled the appropriate-sized hole and inserted the provided rubber grommet. There you have it, the installation is done like dinner! Dig the clean appearance of... Dig the clean appearance of the modified gate. Both the rear view and side... Both the rear view and side view have been changed dramatically. Even the opened gate looks... Even the opened gate looks much better. Now all we need is a barbecue, some steaks and a few coldies to complete this tailgate party.
