Punching Sheetmetal Louvers 67 To 72 Chevy Trucks
When it comes to punching louvers, just about any piece of sheetmetal can be a tareted canvas for the day. Today's task at hand is this brand-new LMC Truck roll pan for '67-72 Chevy trucks.

Mike Hight's louver punch can get into some pretty tight spaces. However, in order to get the amount of louvers desired in this pan, the upper flange of the pan needed to be whacked off. In the end, it's not going to hurt anything because that flange was for bolting the pan to the bed-- but since this pan has plans to get welded in, that flange was of no importance. Remember: there are always alternate solutions, sometimes you just gotta think.

Sheetmetal Louvers Fabrication Placement Measure
Before any louvers can be punched Mike must first "layout" the roll pan and determine each louver's placement. The first step is to decide where the first louver will be punched from the edge of the panel. For the initial test run, Mike set the cetnerline of first punch at 3 inches. Because each louver is 3 inche, the louver will start 1 1/2 inches from the edge of the pan. These lines are dubbed "off-end" lines.

Next, Mike must determine the horizontal amount of louvers he can fit along the pan. In order to figure things out, Mike first measures the distance between the off-end lines, just marked in cpation 3, which turned out to be 61 inches. Knowing that each louver is 3 inches long, and an adequate amount of space beween each louver is 1 1/2 inches, Mike determine he can get 13 louvers in the given space. Next, he must find the centerline of each louver. To do that he divides 61 by 13, and comes up with a center line of each louver at 4 4/8 inches apart. At that point Mike starts marking the centerline at 4 5/8 inches along the pan, starting with one of the off-end marks. If things pan out, in terms of distances being even on both sides of the edge panel, he moves on. If not, he has to tweak some measurements. In this case, things didn't quite work out even, therefore the off-end lines were moved out to 3 7/16 inches in order for things to work out.

Once the horizontal amount has been set, the vertical number must be worked out. Because of the break in the roll pan, the amount of vertical louvers is somewhat confined in order to keep good aesthetics. Like anything, improper execution of louvers can still throw off the visual effect intended. Therefore, Mike determined that two louvers per half of the roll pan would be sufficient, and moved on to creating an equal distance beween the louvers.

With all the measurements worked out, Mike flipped the roll pan over and transferred the keynotes to the backside, since it is the side that must get punched. First, the vertical centerlines are applied.
