Possibly the best part about the new Vintage Air Gen IV kit is that the entire system mounts under your dash for a clean, compact look. It's perfect for anyone looking to smooth that firewall and still retain A/C, or if you want to build a custom dash without those old-school controls creating an eyesore.
In my case, with Project Get Shorty I plan on doing both of the aforementioned-and keeping the cab cool with A/C. The new Vintage Air kit is perfect for this application. Seeing that the Gen IV kit is universal it will work with just about anything-once you add some ingenuity to the mix in terms of mounting it. Check it out.
19.With the holes drilled, simply put the bulkhead in place and secure it by tightening the nuts on the backside. | 20.Here's the reason I mounted the evaporator slightly off to the left. There has to be ample room to run the lines from the four bulkhead connectors to the inlets and outlets on the evaporator. | 21.Time to install the vents. The unit uses a total of four vents: a passenger, a driver, and two center vents. I choose these round, brushed-aluminum Venturi vents for my driver and passenger vents. |
22.Because I wanted them to look as sleek and "factory" as possible, I choose to mount them on the bottom corners of each side of the dash by drilling two holes with a 21/2-inch hole saw. | 23.For the center mounts I decided to go with two small rectangular vents. Staying with the sleek-and-stylish theme I decided to mount each vent on the bottom lip of the dash. Using a cutoff wheel, I cut out the rectangular shape of the vent, placed the vent, and secured the vents by screwing on the backside vent ducts. | 24.The evaporator has four vent outlets on the left side and two defrost outlets in the center. When it comes time to route the ducting, simply place the ducting on one of the outlets, run it to one of the installed vents and cut the ducting with razor blades. It's that simple. |
25.Yet another key advantage to the Gen IV setup: it's completely wire controlled. No vacuum lines or cables are required. This black panel is the Streamline Knob. It, too, can be mounted anywhere by cutting a hole for the outer shell and holding it in place with the backing screws. I choose to mount mine under the dash, like so. The panel is also available polished. Both feature white LED backlighting. | 26.The unit is completely installed and controlled via wires. To bring the unit to life, first plug in the streamline panel, then plug in the wiring harness. For the most part, the wiring harness is plug-and-play-but a few wires do need to be tapped into power, ground, key-on ignition, and so on. | 27.When it comes to plumbing, Vintage Air supplies each kit with a DIY hose kit. |
28.Simply cut the hose to the desired length and crimp the desired supplied fitting to each end of the hose. | 29.One more item that needs to be installed is the condenser. The condenser mounts to the front of the radiator with the supplied hardware. However, this portion of the install will have to wait. With a little forethought, this new system can be installed in just about anything. | |
