This is what the completed weld should look like. Note the discoloration of the base material; this is known as the heat-affected zone (HAZ). Excessive heat or too slow of a travel speed can cause this area to enlarge, and on thin materials, heat is a bad thing that leads to warping. To help maintain the amount of heat, weld in small segments, and allow for cooling between welds. View Related Article
