One of the more common mistakes novice welders make is having too much stickout (3/4 inch or more). Generally, maintain a stickout of 1/4-3/8 inch. A short stickout helps ensure a good start. Here's a tip: Hold your snips at a 45-degree angle from the edge of the nozzle, cut the wire, and you'll automatically get about a 3/8-inch stickout. View Related Article
