1956 Ford F-100 Tonneau Cover Install - Twin Tonneaus

 To determine where to mount...  To determine where to mount the second tonneau cover's hinge/driprail, Rob measured the length and width of both covers, in addition to the length and width of the bed. He wrote the measurements on the underside of the covers.  He used the carpenter's square...  He used the carpenter's square to locate the second hinge/driprail and marked the location on the bedsides. Since the holes would show through the bedsides, nutserts can't be used for installing the second tonneau's hinge/ driprail...  ...Rob also measured where...  ...Rob also measured where to position an angle iron bracket and figured out how big it should be.  After cutting two pieces of...  After cutting two pieces of sheetmetal, Rob marked where to bend the pieces to form angle iron brackets.  Rob bent each sheetmetal piece...  Rob bent each sheetmetal piece to form 90-degree angled brackets.  For mock-up purposes, spot-welds...  For mock-up purposes, spot-welds attached the brackets to the bedsides.  So he could drill mounting...  So he could drill mounting holes in the hinge/ driprail, Rob used Vise-Grips for holding it in position.  Drilling through the hinge/...  Drilling through the hinge/ driprail and the brackets came next.  Rob made brackets for the...  Rob made brackets for the backside of the hinge/driprail...  ...and formed 90-degree bends...  ...and formed 90-degree bends in them within the press-break.  After marking where to place...  After marking where to place the first spot-welds for the backside brackets, Rob welded them...  ...Notice the brackets form...  ...Notice the brackets form a pie shape and wedge in. Making them thus will improve their hold on the hinge/ driprail.  Once the welds had cooled,...  Once the welds had cooled, Tim and Rob installed the rear tonneau cover.  The power actuators will not...  The power actuators will not be installed until later in the pickup's build. Installing the covers took Rob a bit over three hours, not bad for the first installation of the one-off Pro's Pick twin tonneau covers.  Open or closed, the covers...
