Routing the wires for the... Routing the wires for the engine was next. The alternator wires, routed down the driver-side valve cover, were cut to length and terminated. The additional high-output wire, which comes in the kit, was also added to the output post of the alternator. This wire allows maximum output-current flow to the battery from the alternator. | The alternator was a standard... The alternator was a standard Delcotron, requiring an exciter wire. The plug for the regulator-exciter wiring is included in the kit, as are assembly instructions. | The A/C compressor, engine... The A/C compressor, engine temperature sender, and choke wires were routed down the passenger-side valve cover, terminated, and attached. |
The maxi fuse holder was mounted... The maxi fuse holder was mounted on the lower passenger-side firewall. This fuse protects the entire electrical system from overload, should a major failure or accident occur. | An 8-gauge wire, included... An 8-gauge wire, included in the kit, was routed from the starter/battery-cable post to one side of the maxi fuse and attached. Another short length was then routed from the other side of the maxi fuse to the relocated original junction block. The alternator output, fuse block input, and air-conditioning input were then also attached to the post of the junction block. | The wires for the taillights... The wires for the taillights and rear turn signals were routed from the bulkhead connector down the inside of the driver-side framerail and held in place by the original clips. Plastic loom was again installed for extra protection from the elements. |
Bullet (style) quick connectors... Bullet (style) quick connectors were used to attach the taillight and license plate wires to the harness. This allows easy removal for bulb replacement or repairs without cutting any wires. | Moving on to the interior,... Moving on to the interior, the original horn relay was removed and discarded. The new fuse block has a horn relay mounted at its base and is pre-wired. | The remaining groups of wires... The remaining groups of wires were routed and held in place with clamps. This group includes all the wires for the instruments and dash-mounted switches. |
The new dimmer switch was... The new dimmer switch was mounted in the original location (on the floor) and the pre-wired pigtail was plugged in. | Wires for the fuel-tank sending... Wires for the fuel-tank sending unit, dome light, and stereo were routed under the sill plate for protection. | Extra wires for the speakers... Extra wires for the speakers and dome light, which will be installed later, were tucked away behind the seat. |
The ignition-switch connector... The ignition-switch connector was pre-installed and ready to plug in. | The headlight switch was also... The headlight switch was also pre-wired for ease of installation. | The wiper-switch harness has... The wiper-switch harness has the connectors in place for easy hook-up. |
The turn-signal wires in the... The turn-signal wires in the harness are pre-terminated with original-style terminals. The original plastic connector (no longer serviced by GM) was un-pinned, then re-pinned with the new harness terminals. | Once re-pinned, the column... Once re-pinned, the column and harness simply plug together. | The dash assembly was now... The dash assembly was now ready to be installed. The main connector for the printed circuit on the back of the dash is like the original. As per the instructions, the choice of gauges or indicator lights can be made by hooking up either of the wires to the connector. |
With all the wiring installed,... With all the wiring installed, a small battery charger was attached to the battery cables and each circuit was tested. The battery charger was used because it won't create an excess of current in any circuit, in case there is a problem somewhere in the electrical system. | All the circuits checked out... All the circuits checked out OK. The crew has completed their training, and Dave has a re-wired truck. Everyone was happy and a great deal more confident about the task of re-wiring a truck. | |
