On the left is the traditional high-compression combustion chamber used on the musclecars of the '60s and early '70s. The Vortec's heart-shaped combustion chamber on the right is a sophisticated design that adds swirl to the air/fuel mixture as it enters the cylinder. Notice the location of the spark plug hole; it has been relocated toward the center of the cylinder on the Vortec head. This is the main reason why the Vortec engine needs less spark advance and is less susceptible to detonation. Both of these chambers will produce the same amount of compression, and they both hold 64 cc's of liquid. View Related Article
