Leaving an ash-covered car outside on wet nights or foggy mornings may very well result in chemical etching and, in some cases, serious damage to a vehicle’s painted surfaces.”

Potassium when mixed with water has the potential to form potassium hydroxide, which has the same corrosive characteristics as drain cleaner. To combat the potential ash hazard Meguiar’s suggests the following precautions and remedies:

Keep all vehicles in a secure garage when not in use and be sure vehicle windows and sunroofs are closed to minimize any residual exposure to the ash.

If a garage is not available, the next best option is a fitted car cover to protect vehicle surfaces and keep excessive ash residue off of painted surfaces, wheels, and tires as much as possible.

If a vehicle must be left outside in an exposed area during the fires, owners can minimize or eliminate the threat of paint damage by carefully washing and then thoroughly drying their vehicles each day until the ash threat subsides.

Once the fires subside, owners should give each vehicle a comprehensive cleaning, first washing away any remaining ash residue with a product specifically designed for autos.

Not only has the cash award been increased, but a set of Pirelli tires, and additional prizes to be announced, have been added to the overall AMBR award.

Significant rules changes for the AMBR title come with the announcement by John Buck that contenders will have to be competing for the first time to be eligible. I found the answer and it's not pretty, infact it's brutal.

Most likely some of the most disturbing footage any automotive enthusiast can witness which you can find in the next paragraph. Check out these step-by-step instructions the government has given dealerships to follow on how to disable an engine. The sad thing is if the dealership does not follow they get a $15,000 fine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waj2KrKYTZo&feature=player_embedded

WARNING: this is only to be instructive and educational, do not try and do this before you turn in your car.

Here are the instructions:

THIS PROCEDURE IS NOT TO BE USED BY THE VEHICLE OWNER

1. Obtain solution of 40% sodium silicate/60% water. (The Sodium Silicate
(SiO2/Na2O) must have a weight ratio of 3.0 or greater.)
2. Drain engine oil for environmentally appropriate disposal.
3. Install the oil drain plug.
4. Since the procedure is intended to render the engine inoperative, drive or move the
vehicle to the desired area for disablement.
5. Pour enough solution in the engine through the oil fill for the oil pump to circulate
the solution throughout the engine. Start by adding 2 quarts of the solution, which
should be sufficient in most cases.
CAUTION: Wear goggles and gloves. Heacock Classic's has come up with 10 great tips that should keep your truck a little safer...

1. Always Choose Covered Parking Whenever Possible

Though it seems like an obvious choice, many owners may not realize the importance of this decision. Covered parking provides protection from extreme heat and harsh sun rays, and other undesirable elements such as rain, hail, sleet, snow, bird deposits and tree sap - all of which can lead to a deteriorating paint job and possible other damage.

2. Try and Choose a Parking Spot that is Visible From Your Destination

Parking in a spot that you can see from your destination will allow you to witness any possible danger, before it happens. Because it also gives the impression that you are nearby, potential troublemakers will be more likely to stay away from your collectible or treat it with the respect it deserves.

3. Don't Park Under a Tree

If you must park in open space, avoid parking under a tree. Bird's live in trees and are not nearly as careful with your collectible as you are. Furthermore, parking under a tree may subject you to tree sap - a collector's worst nightmare, since dripping tree sap can degrade a custom paint job.

4. Make Sure People are Aware of Your Collectible

If you frequently attend a particular special event or place of recreation, try to become friendly with any parking attendants or as many event regulars as possible. Feel free to tell them about your car, or even take them out for a spin. Giving them a reason to love your car as much as you do will help in the long run, because may ensure that they will look after your car, even when you may not be around. And don't forget, giving the valet a bigger tip may make certain that he looks out for you.

5. Install an Anti-Theft Device

Any sort of sounding alarm can help ward off those who may be looking to damage or even steal your classic. Whether it is an in-car system or portable device, being prepared for the worst is always a good move. You may also consider having a tracking device such as Lojack installed for extra security.

6. Recognize a Compliment

Many other people may appreciate your car, so remember to politely acknowledge every compliment you receive. A simple courteous response can prevent future harmful actions to your collectible from someone who may have felt slighted by you. In addition, people who appreciate your car can also lookout for its safety. And remember, the kid you insult today is the car collector of tomorrow.

7. Cut Your "Ding Factor" by 50%

Whenever possible, park at the end of a row to prevent accidental dings done by lazy or careless drivers. If an end spot in not available, your best bet is to avoid any tight or compact space. Do your best to pick a space big enough for you and your car to move in and out of comfortably.

8. Try not to Take Up Two Spots

By taking up more than one space in an effort to protect your collectible, you could actually hinder someone else from parking his/her vehicle, which may ultimately lead to a driver taking out his/her frustrations on your prized classic.

9. Don't Forget Your Car Cover as a First Defense

Your car cover is your collectible's best friend and should be used whenever possible. Not only will it protect your classic from everyday elements such as extreme weather conditions, but it can also block hard objects such as bouncing balls, skateboards and shopping carts wheels from scratching the surface of your car.

10. Consider Street Parking

Just because there might be a parking lot available at your destination doesn't mean you have to take it. Parking parallel to the street in a good area means that you avoid most of the congestion that comes with a parking lot, thereby avoiding numerous door dings and/or scratches.

Click the titles or the image to read the fully story and leave your opinion.

Here is a press release that shares a more positive view on the Cash For Clunkers topic. Let me know if you agree or disagree.

The American International Automobile Dealers Association today applauded news that the House of Representatives has overwhelmingly passed a scrappage, or "Cash for Clunkers" bill. The bill, H.R. 2640 - the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act, was sponsored by Rep. Betty Sutton (D-Ohio). If it passes through the Senate, it will provide consumers with up to $4,500 for trading in an old vehicle for a new, more fuel efficient model.

"For months, while Congress has debated a scrappage program, consumers have postponed their automotive purchases," said AIADA President Cody Lusk. "However imperfect, if this bill clears the Senate, dealers can look forward to a true stimulus program that will incentivize customers to buy. International nameplate dealers view this legislation as a big step toward an industry-wide recovery."

Elsewhere, similar scrappage programs have seen great success, with countries such as Germany achieving a 28 percent increase in vehicles sales. To date, autos sales in the U.S. are down 36.5 percent from 2008.

The provisions would 1) require that scrapped vehicles be less than 25 years old and 2) permit the engine and drive train to be recycled if they have been disassembled.

The recommendations were proposed in a letter to the Congressional leadership as lawmakers finalize an accelerated vehicle retirement program known as "cash for guzzlers." While SEMA has supported vouchers toward the purchase of fuel-efficient new vehicles as a mechanism to direct new car sales to the automakers and dealerships, the association has steadfastly opposed tying these vouchers to a vehicle scrappage requirement. SEMA offered the amendments as a means to improve the legislation.

Under the draft legislation currently circulating in Congress, the program would last up to one year and potentially scrap one million older cars and trucks. The scrapped vehicle must get less that 18 mpg (15 mpg for heavy pick-ups and vans). The car buyer would receive a $3,500 voucher if they bought a new passenger car that was at least 4 mpg higher than the older vehicle, or a new pickup truck/SUV that was at least 2 mpg higher than the old truck. They would receive a $4,500 if the passenger car was at least 10 mpg higher and the truck/SUV was at least 5 mpg higher. The program would mandate that the engine block and drive train be destroyed.

"SEMA is working with lawmakers to mitigate some of the legislation's unintended consequences and its potential damage to the automotive aftermarket," said Chris Kersting, SEMA's President & CEO. "These commonsense proposals will make sure the government is not spending $3,500 or 4,500 on a vehicle that may only be worth a few hundred dollars but may have potential value to vehicle collectors and to promote the benefits of parts recycling."

A vehicle that is 25 years old or older is rarely driven, does not contribute to the nation's dependence on foreign oil, and is worth far less than the government voucher. A 25-year exclusion would also guarantee that older cars that have an historic or aesthetic value are not inadvertently crushed. These vehicles are valued by hobbyists or may be a source of recyclable parts for use on restoration projects.

The letter to the Congressional leadership noted that recycling the engine and transmission is environmentally sensitive. "If the legislation simply requires that the equipment be disassembled as the vehicle is scrapped, it would fulfill lawmakers' intent to prevent an engine/drive train from being directly installed into another vehicle," Kersting added. "The responsible recycling of parts is a better solution for preserving natural resources and reducing CO2 emissions than crushing the equipment."

Rebuilt engines require an estimated 80% less energy to produce than a new engine and cost 30-50% less since the core has been salvaged. Critical internal parts are replaced so the final rebuilt product is one that meets or exceeds original equipment performance standards. The engine/transmission can even surpass new car technology with the simple addition of new-technology retrofit equipment.

SEMA's recommendations are intended to reduce the damage a vehicle scrappage program would impose on thousands of independent repair shops, auto restorers and recyclers, customizers and their customers across the country. SEMA will continue to promote alternative incentive programs that will help clean the environment, provide for vehicle and parts recycling, and preserve collector cars for future generations.

Here's the '68 Jimmy on my tandem trailer getting hauled out of the orange grove and headed to its new life as a shortbed.

You guys all know the Specialist from the forums, his name is Tony and it was the first time we met in person when he offered to help me haul the '68 home. There were no keys for it, but Tony has a bunch of vehicles, so he pulled out a collection of keys that would make a car thief proud, and his Astro Van key worked! Since we couldn't fit the trailer through the gate into the orange grove, we had to either drag the GMC out with a chain, or if luck would have it, start it up after not running for four years and drive out. We dropped in a new battery, poured a little gas into the carb, and the GMC fired right up. When I told my girlfriend about it, she said "that's a GMC for you!" I'll be back with more later and let you guys in on what we have planned.
