We're sometimes asked what some of our all-time favorite kits are. What the all-time ultimate model car kit ever might be is a personal thing. We always have a hard time making a final cut. If the person asking the question is asking for a personal preference, we have several. There are certain qualifiers: Are we talking about technical and design quality? Pure accuracy? Perhaps we're simply being asked for a cool subject selection?

Every veteran builder has a list of favorites, but our subject kit this month is almost universally considered to be one of the vintage truck hobby's best-at least among those modelers who are actually aware it exists.

Galaxie Limited is Gary Schmidt's creation. A while ago (1979), Gary took a look at this hobby and saw that it was in a really grim condition. There was little worthwhile new products, no supporting media, and the hobby's most faithful devotees were widely dispersed and secretive. Gary created the world-class Scale Auto Enthusiast Magazine, which helped lead the newly adult-oriented builders into the hobby's second "golden age." SAE and its active vocal readership teamed to coerce the hobby kit manufacturers to create better products, which in turn sold well. The hobby kit nitch prospered nicely. After 18 years as a publisher, Gary started his own model company, and the Galaxie Limited brand was born.

During Gary's SAE days, modelers clamored for accurate kits of the early-postwar Chevrolets while also voicing their wishes for Tamiya-level detail in an American-subject kit. With his magazine frustrations in his rear-view mirror, Gary combined various concepts for the first high-end Galaxie product. The '46-48 Chevy Sedan Delivery and Aerosedan kits combine high detail accuracy with a moderate parts count. The unboxed kits may look a bit intimidating at first, but completion of the well-planned subassemblies is no more difficult than any in countless other inferior kits.

The Galaxie Chevy can be found in most of the nation's more attentive hobby shops. If your local shop doesn't carry them, ask the shop to stock this fine kit. Failing that, get out that other kind of plastic and give Galaxie Limited a call to order direct. We think you'll enjoy building this one as much as we did.
