This rare 1942 Ford Shorty fire engine was hidden in a five-door corrugated steel utility shed deep in the woods behind a trailer park in rural Northern Indiana.

Years ago, the German Township truck was taken out of service and driven into the shed under its own power. It is hemmed in by stacks of used tires and rolls of snow fence. Shorty is part of an estate vehicle collection that includes a ’55 Packard Clipper hardtop and a ’57 Mercury Turnpike cruiser convertible. I thought the fire truck, however, was the pick of the litter.
