For some, things are so simple. They know what they want, where they want it, how they want it, and they wanted it yesterday. It's a straight shot down the beeline, and that's that. Spanky Newman is one of those gunslingin' dudes who shoots first and asks questions later, simply because he knows what he wants.
For Spanky, trucks are his thing. He gets them, and they get him. There's no getting around it; plain and simple, he's just an avid truck lover, and part of his manifest destiny was to own a short widebed truck someday. Things fell into place when Spanky picked up this '84 Chevy for $3,500 four years ago. The plan was simple. He wanted to keep the truck looking like the utilitarian vehicles he loves so much, but still give it that Spankified touch.
First things first, Spanky needed to get the chassis in order. Seeing as how the truck just cracks the legal drinking age in, well, age, the chassis was pretty solid. It was already outfitted with quality steering, disc brakes up front, and good bushings, so he crossed the bare necessities off the list. However, one thing the chassis was not equ ipped with was the stance Spanky was after. Up front, the first things to go were the stock spindles. In their place are new two-inch drop spindles from DJM along with DJM springs. Out back, the truck received the DJM touch once again when Spanky threw in a set of DJM four-inch lowering leaf springs.
For ride comfort, kyB shocks were added at all four corners. another defining mod added to all four corners was a giantsized rozzi 22x9-inch roller. Hugging the deuce deuces is Nitto 285/35r22 rubber. In terms of power, the 350 and 700-r4 that came in the truck were just fine; however, Spanky did throw on edelbrock chrome valve covers along with a chrome air cleaner He also installed a B&M shift kit and a Flowmaster 2 1/2-inch exhaust system.
For the exterior, things went deeper than just a few flesh wounds. The '84's lines were massaged yet still kept evident. For example, Spanky kept the door handles, but he did away with the door locks. The same goes for the bed. Spanky left pieces of trim and the tailgate handle intact, but he filled in the stake pockets. Next, Spanky cleaned up the Chevy's roofline by doing away with the driprail. From there he took the truck to CD Designs in Moore, Oklahoma, for body and paintwork. The crew there worked the body to perfection and then laid down the House Of kolor kandy root Beer with just a touch of miniflake on the truck's top half. DuPont Black coats the truck from the beltline down. The last step was for Charles Degard to apply the graphics. Because Spanky decided to ditch the stock trim, Charles worked up a graphic/trim scheme to separate the two-tone paint job. What he came up with is a throwback Chevrolet logo and trim theme that gives the Chevy a unique look and feel.
Finishing off the truck's exterior is some new ornamentation. Instead of sticking with the stock grille and bumpers, Spanky pirated a front grille setup from a '91 Suburban. He also installed the Suburban's front and rear bumpers, as well as mid-'90s Chevy mirrors.
On the inside, Spanky's mindset was plush and loud. Instead of sticking with the stock bench seat, he threw a late model GM truck bench in the '84's cab. From there he had elI Upholstery stitch up the cab in brown and tan leather. He also built a custom center console that houses a DVD and VCr player. The door panel houses custom speakers, and behind the seat sit four 10-inch Ma audio subs and two Planet audio amps. Finishing things off are auto Meter gauges housed in the stock locations. as you can see, Spanky is not only a man who knows what he wants, but a man who also gets what he wants.
