Although the truck rolled on a solid setup, what really drew Charles to the truck was the bodywork. Being built in Kustom City, it's no surprise the truck has spent hours under the torch and between hammers and dollies. For starters, Bruce began by stretching the '49's cab a full eight inches. With the elongated cab under control, he then sliced four inches from the top. Still, things were only just beginning. The next step was to ditch the conventional door opening style and develop a hinge system to suicide the doors. With the cab pretty much finished, the rest of the body was then shaved clean, nosed, and frenched. Along with the body, the front bumper was shaved as well, and the back bumper was tossed altogether for a new custom roll pan with '39 Hudson taillights.
With the truck pretty much the way Charles envisioned it, he only had to concentrate on a few areas he wanted to alter. The first thing that had to be changed was the two-tone blue paintjob. After talking with his stepson, Jay Cheever, the two decided the only color for the truck was black. Jay took the truck under his wing and laid down the Sherwin Williams black paint job covering the entire truck; no chrome for this sinister Chevy. To really bring out the ominous black paintjob, Charles paired it with a bright red interior. Instead of going with a mundane interior, the seat and door panels were stitched up in red vinyl. Matching the interior is a '55 Chevy passenger car dash, also repainted to blend in with the red vinyl, and a red leather-wrapped Billet Specialties steering wheel. The last step Charles took was to bolt up the American Racing Salt Flat wheels.
Although it may have taken Charles a little bit longer than planned to finally have a Chevy all his own, one thing is for sure: the juxtaposition between the all-black paintjob and the red interior makes this heavily customized hauler well worth the wait.
