Ford, Chevy & GMC Trucks - Reader's Trucks

By John Gilbert
1948 Ford F1
Fully Loaded "Flattie"
Larry Beecher of Largo, Florida, proved that flathead power doesn't mean you have to push in a clutch for gear-changes or roll the windows down for cold air. Larry's '48 F-1 flathead-powered pickup features a C-4 Flat-o-matic with air-conditioning from Vintage Air. The flattie gets its power boost from a Mercury stroker crank, .060 overbore, and an Isky cam. Further modern updates in the 15-year renew process include a Mustang II frontend with disc brakes.

1973 Chevy Pickup Truck
Craig's Chico Chevy
Craig Geyer of Chico, California, said his son and their neighbor helped with the eight-year project of building his '73 Chevy. Craig went the retro route and dropped in a blueprinted 327-inch Chevy small-block hooked to a Turbo 400 spinning a beefed driveshaft into a 9-inch Ford rearend with 4.11 gears. Big meats on 15x15-inch Centerline Convo Pro wheels stop in a heartbeat thanks to four-wheel disc brakes.

1957 Chevy Pickup Truck
Ray's Air-Damned '57
Radical isn't the word when the subject is Nevada resident Ray Whitcombe and his uniquely styled Tri-Five Chevy shortbed. Ray told us the bodylines on his '57 were brought into proper alignment by lifting the box 4 inches and adding 4 inches to the running-board skirts to discreetly conceal the body mod. Notice how Ray fabricated a front air dam with a lipped motif extending onto the running boards and rear fenders. A Camaro front clip supplies a home to a 350-inch Chevy.

1964 Chevy Pickup Truck
Cliff White's Blue '64 Chevy
Into old trucks since his first hot rod, a '32 Ford roadster pickup in the earl '60s, Cliff White of Tustin, California, loves hot rods and custom classic trucks. Cliff's '64 stepside shortbed is a great rust-free example of a California original. Powered by a TPI 350-inch Chevy engine with a 700-R4 tranny, hot days are subdued with air conditioning, power steering, and power disc brakes. The Flint, Michigan, factory this truck rolled out of new is now an empty field.

1969 Gmc Pickup Truck
Sweet Georgia Green GMC
Gary Hancock of McDonough, Georgia, is a lucky man. His wife, Jo, spotted this '69 GMC for sale and told him about it. Gary, with the help of his son Gray, had a blast tracking down used parts and ordering new parts from CCT advertisers. His friend Barry Pickens helped Gary go through its 350-inch engine with a .030 overbore and a cam, carb, and intake from Edelbrock. Southside Collision in Griffin, Georgia, in Gary's words, "did a superb job on the bodywork and paint."
