"The first thing you have to do when you get there is keep driving north on Buck Owens Blvd. until you get to Zingos Caf and then pull in and have a big piece of pecan pie. When you're done eating at Zingos meet up with Tim Bernsau, Rod & Custom's feature editor and follow him out to McFarland, California, for the 50th Annual March Meet held at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway and then bring back as many photos of vintage push trucks as possible."
What our editor had in mind sounded like an easy enough assignment, but as we rolled into Famoso's 60-plus acres of pit area, it was painfully obvious there wasn't going to be a lot of guys using old trucks to push-start their dragsters. We got back on the phone and explained that we could only find one push truck and that it seemed like the rest of folks running rails or Altereds were using modern means to light their motors up. "No problem. There has to be a bunch of classic trucks there, or a bunch of neat dragsters. Get Bernsau a piece of Zingos' pecan pie to go, then turn him loose."
