Especially when we cover a show for the first time, there's sweet anticipation. The morning of travel, we rise early with our game face on. If the event is out of state, air travel is inevitable. We have to remember not to wear a belt, have sneakers on, be without change in our pockets, place car keys and cell phone in the camera bag, and wear a big smile for the security guards. The flight to Denver, via Salt Lake City, went with-out incident. Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado Springs, Colorado, was the location for the Goodguys 8th Colorado Springs Nationals, held September 9 through September 11, 2005. Travel went so smoothly on Thursday, we made it to the host hotel fast enough to scout out the parking lot for early-arriving vintage trucks. Surprisingly, none were in evidence. Hoping to see some pristine haulers at the racetrack, early Friday morning we were on the scene with the first show registrants. We hustled around the venue in search of the finest old Chevys, Dodges, Hudsons, Internationals, Studebakers, and Fords. Not too many were on hand. We wondered why. After talking to many returning attendees and participants, we learned something. Colorado shows typically don't draw big crowds on Friday. Show-stopping attendance is usually on Saturday and Sunday. Employers, please let your colleagues be at the Colorado shows on Friday. Let it be known that Custom Classic Trucks advocates working and playing hard! Now that we've voiced our opinion, we can get back to the Colorado Springs Nationals. Attendance on Saturday and Sunday was astounding. Award-worthy pickups from every era were present both days. What with all the weekend's hot rod hauler entries, CCT's feature editor had a hard time narrowing the field to the CCT Top Ten. He managed to find an eclectic group of Studebakers, Chevys, a GMC, an International, and some Fords. Get your game face on and discover the goings on at the Goodguys 8th Colorado Springs Nationals. With any luck, you'll be so impressed you'll attend next year's event, starting on Friday. For more information on all the Goodguys events, visit the website, www.good guys.com. Friday participant, Chuck... Friday participant, Chuck Macchieto of Rye, CO, drove his freshly finished '65 Chevy C10 to the show. It's powered by the reliable 383/350 combo, but you know that, since you've already read the article in this issue ("A Chevy's Renaissance," page 62). With a 454ci big-block engine... With a 454ci big-block engine and a TH400 trans in place to power Mr. Reister's '48 Chevy, rapid transit is a given. We gather Speedy Jenn's Speed... We gather Speedy Jenn's Speed Shop is located in Colorado Springs, CO. Jenn and the '36 Ford shop truck reside there. Also, check out the big skies that envelop all of Colorado. Winning the Truckville Pick... Winning the Truckville Pick (Sponsored by Dodge) was Ed Waugh of Pueblo, CO, for his 291ci Dodge Hemi-powered '48 Dodge pickup. Sporting black, purple, and... Sporting black, purple, and yellow paintwork, Nathan Mayes' 72 Chevy C10 looked slick standing still. Nathan, a Pueblo, CO, resident, equipped his truck with the ever-popular 350/350 combo. Earning the Goodguys Cool... Earning the Goodguys Cool Commercial prize was Castlerock, CO's Chris Reister for his artfully flamed '48 Chevy truck. The mascot on Ed's '48 Dodge... The mascot on Ed's '48 Dodge pickup was reminiscent of the artwork applied to WWII American fighter planes. Garnering the Goodguys Texaco/Havoline... Garnering the Goodguys Texaco/Havoline pick was an orange and cream "Bears Classic Cars"-themed '66 Ford 1/2-ton. After seeing Joe and Nikki... After seeing Joe and Nikki Garcia's '28 Ford hi-boy sedan delivery, perhaps The Coca Cola Company should change its slogan to: "Hot rods go better with Coca Cola." The Garcias and their gorgeous delivery live in Raton, NM. For his '58 GMC, Jerry Kabbe... For his '58 GMC, Jerry Kabbe selected 350/350 power and dark green paint. CCT readers know how different... CCT readers know how different '39 NASTRUCK is from a stock '39 Ford pickup, if they read the article in our Nov. '05 issue. NASTRUCK was designed and built at Just Dream'N (owned by Russ Tilkes) in Golden, CO. Winning a coveted Custom Classic... Evident everywhere in the swap-meet area were vintage pickups of all sizes, ready to be rescued and revitalized by their new caretakers. Here, a Ford COE and a Ford '40 vintage cab hope to find a new home. K.C. and Colette Van Niman... K.C. and Colette Van Niman of Littleton, CO, own a '39 Ford pickup that may look stock, but it offers plenty of creature comforts within the cab, including: A/C, electric windows, leather upholstery, CD/stereo system and an electric cowl vent. The engine's a Ford Racing 302ci with aluminum heads and backed by a smooth shifting C4 trans. Achieving the Meguiar's Magnificence... Achieving the Meguiar's Magnificence Masterpiece award was Steve Delaney of Arvada, CO, for his '29 Ford Model A pickup. Steve's A has blown Chevy 400ci power and a TH400 trans. Cool. Doug and Jan Magleby of Monroe,... Doug and Jan Magleby of Monroe, UT, premiered their highly modified '49 GMC pickup in the summer of 2004. Another ever-so-cool Studebaker graced the Goodguys Colorado Springs event. Steve Doerschlag of Eaton, CO, showed up with his Art Deco-inspired '37 Studebaker Coupe Express. The pickup has a supercharged Studebaker Avanti 289ci V-8 and Studebaker auto trans for forward propulsion. Steve's creation garnered a Custom Classic Trucks Top Ten award. There were a couple of outstanding... There were a couple of outstanding '48 Chevy pickups. We decided to award them both Custom Classic Trucks Top Ten prizes. Louie Fesmire of Pueblo, CO, finished his '48 earlier this year. Great job, Louie! Unless you live under a rock,... Unless you live under a rock, you've already seen Royce and Jane Glader's '29 Ford roadster pickup. The awesome hauler premiered at the 2005 AMBR show, held in Pomona, CA, late January. Since stealing the truck is illegal, we gave the Gladers a CCT Top Ten trophy instead. The pickup also earned a Goodguys Fab Five award. The Gladers live in nearby Fort Collins, CO. Silver's a hue that's challenging... Silver's a hue that's challenging to photograph well. Nevertheless, a sleek '46 International pickup, owned by Steve Dalrymple of Arvada, CO, caught our fancy. We awarded Steve with a Custom Classic Trucks Top Ten pick. That's Steve posing with his prized pickup. Mike Yoder's '35 Ford truck... Mike Yoder's '35 Ford truck looks more like a '30s-era Citroen. His business, Kustom Auto Restyling in Hutchinson, KS, crafted the sublime hot rod hauler. For his efforts, he earned both a Goodguys Fab Five selection and a Custom Classic Trucks Top Ten award. The other '48 Chevy pickup... The other '48 Chevy pickup that won the CCT Top Ten award has been finished longer, but it looks every bit as fresh as any truck we saw at the event. Adam McRoberts of Altoona, IA, is the proud owner. We featured the '40 Ford Downs... We featured the '40 Ford Downs Manufacturing pickup, owned by Jim and Sue Rhoades of Topeka, KS, earlier this year. Their hauler earned a Custom Classic Trucks Top Ten prize.
