There are many great outdoor events and we're privileged to bring you some of the best in America. These vintage vehicle shows grow bigger and better every year-drawing more vehicles and providing greater fun to increasing numbers of attendees and participants. One of the best late-season rod runs in the Southeast is the legendary Daytona Turkey Run. The event started innocently when members of the Daytona Beach Street Rods were refused entry to an antique auto parade. The following Thanksgiving weekend, they hosted the first official Turkey Rod Run. It grew every year until finally the club changed the show's name, recognizing the universal appeal of the event. Now 31 years later, the Daytona Turkey Run routinely fills the Daytona International Speedway to capacity (5,050 vehicles this year) and attracts more than 80,000 auto enthusiasts to the Thursday through Sunday event. Like most successful ventures, the reason for the club's success is simple. Give folks more fun than they expect and they'll come back next year with their friends! This family reunion atmosphere is one of many reasons for spending the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in Daytona Beach. While most come to admire the huge assembly of cars and trucks, many come to shop. Even with the construction that limited space inside the Speedway, 2,000 vendors spaces occupied meant the selection of automotive equipment was amazing. Need a portable lift to raise your truck inside your garage or a "rotisserie" so you can flip it over and work on the bottom? No problem! There were several versions of both on sale. From performance parts and custom accessories to replacement fiberglass cabs complete with doors, you could find it all. Parts-hauling golf carts carried your treasures back to the parking lot while food vendors replenished your energy throughout the day. Time to trade the old truck? The car corral, with a thousand vehicles on display, made one-stop shopping easy. Buyers and sellers always do a brisk business at the show. Extensive daytime events will tax your stamina, but the fun doesn't stop when the sun goes down. Games like the automotive Teeter Totter, Slow Drags, and Flame-Throwing contests entertained folks and added another dimension to the show. Always the center for the exciting Saturday-night giveaways, more than $25,000 worth of prizes was awarded throughout the four-day show. The one special giveaway and ultimate prize everyone was waiting for was the beautiful '69 Camaro with a 383-stroker motor and Turbo 400 trans. Donations for the annual giveaway car are used by the host club, the Daytona Beach Street Rods, as part of their three-decade commitment to supporting Volusia County charities. This year, Jack Bartlett of St. Mary's, Georgia, was the lucky winner. If you'd like to view a huge collection of custom vehicles, shop for merchandise from thousands of merchants, and have more fun than expected, mark the 2005 Turkey Run dates on your calendar: November 24-27, 2005. If you find your-self in central Florida this Spring, put Florida's second-largest car show, the 14th Annual Spring Daytona Beach Car Show and Swap Meet, on your calendar also. The dates are March 18-20, 2005. Traditionally, more than 2,500 collector cars arrive at Daytona International Speedway for this three-day event. More information is available on both shows by visiting their comprehensive website, www.daytonabeachcarshows.com. Ed Poitras from Valdosta,... Ed Poitras from Valdosta, GA, squeezed more horsepower into his '62 Corvair Green-Briar than the original engineers ever imagined. The mid-mounted 454ci Chevy V-8 spins the fat slicks better than the old flat-six! The '53 Ford pickup of David... The '53 Ford pickup of David Buschman was loaded with extras like the blown dual-quad 400-cid motor under the hood, chromed Jaguar rearend, and four-wheel disc brakes. The chopped-top ride had a Plexiglas bed to show off the chassis mods and was for sale at $18,500. Jake MacDonald said it was... Jake MacDonald said it was time for a change and his sweet '40 Ford was up for sale. Equipped with all the proper go-fast goodies like a 350/350 powertrain, a Mustang front suspension, power windows, air conditioning, and more, the price was $23,500. Ron Rivette loaded his frame-off... Ron Rivette loaded his frame-off and restored '48 Studebaker with extras like a 350/350 powertrain, custom Street Seat interior, and Wild West-themed Chris-Cruz paint job. The chopped, lowered, and shaved truck was super clean visually. This waist-high '32 Ford pickup... This waist-high '32 Ford pickup was chopped, channeled, sectioned, and fitted with a small-block Chevrolet fed by six Stromberg carburetors. The rear fenders were bobbed, and the front fenders and running boards were joined together. Gary Chopit is the proud owner and builder. Susie and Larry Farmer made... Susie and Larry Farmer made the trip from Columbus, OH, to display their red-hot, '47 Chevy pickup. The aggressive-looking ride had a louvered tailgate with the Chevrolet emblem, chopped top, and competition-oriented, spun-aluminum moon disks. This year's giveaway car was... This year's giveaway car was a beautifully restored '69 Camaro equipped with a 383ci stroker motor and Turbo 400 trans. The lucky winner was Jack Bartlett from St. Mary's, GA. Cutting a distinctive profile... Cutting a distinctive profile with its extended cab, twin side-mount spares, fender skirts, and Cadillac taillights, "Stuby" is a '41 GMC COE owned by Phil Beyel. Parked in the car corral, it could be yours for $36,500. Ralph Smith, from Valrico,... Ralph Smith, from Valrico, FL, owns "Dads Garage," his much modified '48 GMC. The extra-length truck uses a Chevy V-8 nestled behind the cab for motive power and boasts two pickup bed's worth of storage in the back. Believing that it's more fun... Believing that it's more fun to have all your toys with you at the same time, Bob Rattiger of Palm Bay, FL, brought his '27 Chevy car hauler with his painted-to-match T-Bucket tagging along for the ride. What's wrong with having "two-much" fun? Rick Finzer is a charter member... Rick Finzer is a charter member of the host club, Daytona Beach Street Rods, and the event coordinator for the Turkey Run. He has owned his '45 (yes, 1945!) Chevy for more than a quarter of a century, modifying it on a regular basis. The 6-inch stretched truck gives Rick a little extra room, and the 350/350 powertrain ensures it stays ahead of modern traffic. Author Joe Greeves' super... Author Joe Greeves' super stepside was surrounded with crowds throughout the show. Many were trying to determine the origin of his hybrid. Like El Caminos, the SS started life as a car ('89 Caprice four-door) and now has a utilitarian bed. Air suspension brings it down, and 20-/22-inch wheels get it rolling. The ultra-clean '47 Chevy... The ultra-clean '47 Chevy panel belongs to Bob and Louann Myers from Gainesville, FL. After chopping the top, shaving off all the nonessentials, and outfitting it with a new modern powertrain, they finished the job with a beautiful Candy Apple Red paint job. Jeff Rice's bright yellow... Jeff Rice's bright yellow '37 Studebaker pickup truck is a rarity, made even better thanks to its authentic side-mount spares and vintage sunvisor, as well as the big, modern chromed V-8 under the flamed hood. We ran this shot so you could... We ran this shot so you could see how we did things back in the '50s. This flaming Ford has all the right stuff like spinner hubcaps and wide whites, fender skirts that hide the rear wheels, and ground-scraping road clearance. The name is Rebel Just Because. That fits it perfectly. One of the sweetest vintage... One of the sweetest vintage pickup trucks we've seen in a while belongs to Bernie and Kathy Gerry from Limerick, MD. Their Dove Gray "Low-Tec" '47 Dodge has a modern V-8 under the hood with a sign that says driven 63,000 miles. Obviously, it is a big part of the family fun. Check the custom running boards, hidden trailer hitch, and widened fenders. This unusual intake is a Don... This unusual intake is a Don Garlits air cleaner that simulates fuel injection but actually uses a 600-cfm Holley on the 302ci Z28 motor. Dennis Delphus combined his '48 Chevy truck with the Z28 motor to create his Z48. Brent Schubert displayed his... Brent Schubert displayed his ultra-clean '35 red Ford pickup truck, all steel with lots of custom work. He used a '99 Z28 Camaro as the source for the powertrain, and he hand-fabricated most of the exterior sheetmetal. Custom and about as classic... Custom and about as classic as you can get, this '18 Model T C-Cab truck, with an oak bed and a supercharged 350 Chevy is owned by Pete O'Connor from Panama City, FL. The patriotic theme just adds to the fun. Ronald and Elana Denman of... Ronald and Elana Denman of Jupiter, FL, knew how to get our attention. Their chopped '77 Chevy pickup truck was loaded with innovative modifications, and we would have photographed it even if they didn't have a copy of CUSTOM CLASSIC TRUCKS on the dashboard! Vendors had a huge selection... Vendors had a huge selection of everything you needed along with a few items you hadn't thought of. Charlie Lewis from Lithia... Charlie Lewis from Lithia Springs, GA, owns this slick Ford. It is painted in an elegant champagne and dark brown and fitted with custom taillights, Colorado Custom rims, and a detailed interior. A custom grille, smoothed bumper, shaved door handles, and a rigid tonneau cover add to the look. Driving in from Tampa, FL,... Driving in from Tampa, FL, Mary Wade has owned and enjoyed her Studebaker pickup truck for the last 10 years. Fitted with a 350ci Chevy under the hood, this red and yellow road rocket, fitted with custom Cadillac tail lamps, goes as good as it looks. Showing that all the custom... Showing that all the custom vehicles at the Turkey Run were not owned by folks drawing Social Security, Anthony De Michael from Lakeland, FL, displayed his custom '88 Chevrolet full-size (a graduation gift that he's been working on for the last several years). Owner of Mild 2 Wild Customs, Anthony cites the truck as the reason for his new career. Jerry and Caren Carpenter... Jerry and Caren Carpenter traveled from a Soddy Daisy, TN, to spend the Thanksgiving weekend in Daytona. Their handcrafted '30 Ford woody extended-cab pickup truck attracted a lot of attention throughout the weekend. Instead of pounding the dents... Instead of pounding the dents out of that old steel cab, consider a new fiberglass replacement from BeBops Glass Works in Athens, TN. This '56 cab, complete with a 1-inch steel tube frame plus hinged, latched, and remote-operating doors would make Henry proud. The price? $5,600. Custom trucks weren't the... Custom trucks weren't the only things on display at the Turkey Run. If you had a little extra room in the pickup bed, you could take home some highly unique automotive-themed furniture guaranteed to appeal to any enthusiast. Some guys just know how to... Some guys just know how to have fun! More than 80,000 spectators... More than 80,000 spectators enjoyed Thanksgiving weekend at the Daytona International Speedway. The collection of 5,000 vehicles and the Turkey Run's reputation for fabulous door prizes added to the fun.
