On November 20-21, 2004 The Goodguys Hot Rod Association, along with events co-sponsor K&N Filters, held the renowned Southwest Nationals at West World of Scottsdale in Arizona. In true showoff fashion, a record number of pre-'72 auto enthusiasts turned out for the event-filling the polo field and spilling out into neighboring parking lots.
For the seventh consecutive year, The Goodguys Hot Rod Association hosted their hot rod exhibition labeled the Southwest Nationals. The show, which benefited hot rodders all over the nation, had a huge turnout with over 2,000 cars and trucks. Valley of the Sun residents, as well as out-of-towners, turned out from all over to help support the oldies. The weekend temperatures started out perfect with 80-degree weather on Saturday, and it chilled up a bit on Sunday with sporadic rain and colder temps. Everything from Bow Ties to robust Fords were out in force to show off their hard work and unique memories.
Among the huge sponsors were also local companies showing their support for the traditional car show. Vendors included Arizona Speed & Marine, Rick's Pickup Parts, and Reaper Choppers. As is the custom for Goodguys' awards, all winners were presented with unique and specified awards instead of the typical First, Second or Third Place trophies. With categories such as Class Act and Low Lid Pick, every award winner goes home with the feeling that his/her car was unique and special. Towards the end of the day on Sunday, the winners did a drive-by parade in front of spectators to receive their award.
Since its inception, the Southwest Nationals has become one of the trademarks for the hot rod season by officially ending the Goodguys' 2004 show season. With the competition staying ahead of its time and the crowds growing at an amazing rate, the Southwest Nationals is sure to continue to be a popular and growing tradition.
